Becoming a member of the Orchestra

Please fill out the form below to apply to join the Nelson Symphony Orchestra. There are currently spaces to be filled in most sections and string players in particular will be welcomed with open arms!

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have experience of playing in an orchestral ensemble. For section leader positions, a minimum standard equivalent to Grade 8 is required. If you have sat music examinations, you will at some stage be requested to provide a photocopy of your highest certificate. If you have not sat music examinations, you may be asked to audition to confirm suitability.

Joining procedures

Once your application has been received, the Secretary will let you know if an audition is required. You will then be invited to play in at least one rehearsal with the orchestra as the final stage in the joining process. If you are applying before 31 December you will be eligible to play in all the concerts for the following year. If you are applying after 31 December you will still get to play with the orchestra if there are spaces within the section, otherwise you may have to wait until the following year.
